A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals got wounded in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the house near Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals were arrested at the site and one more individual who escaped after the blast was located soon after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area showed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to remove the three family members in the past.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the farmhouse was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the siblings caused the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to the media.

A gas canister had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the property, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The prosecutor thought the explosion had happened on a story above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed Italian media, noting that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister united with other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
