A massive bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the year.

The winning bid for the 243-kilogram fish came from the company of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages restaurants across the country and overseas.

"The first tuna brings a prosperous start," stated the business owner, a regular bidder at the traditional January sale.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is famous for submitting record bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Historic Past

After the auction, the successful bidder told journalists that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," stating, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This most recent purchase surpasses his previous notable purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after previously saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to break his own record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally characterized by exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its eateries nationwide.

The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Swift Service

The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly sliced up for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi chains soon after the auction concluded.

"I sense like I've started the year in a good way after tasting something so auspicious as the year starts," shared one happy patron.
